Financial. It will be observed that the total Revenue

received from various services in the Medical Department

amounted to a total of $ 164011.70 a sum approaching half

the total expenditure ($ 371781.92) of the Department for

the year.

General Remarks. The large percentage (12%) of Beri-Beri

among cases admitted to the Tung Wah Hospital is striking

(see also page 28) (→ 846 patients with 44% mortality).

In the treatment of this disease

attention might be called

to the value of an extract made from rice meal (presumably

containing the vitamin lacking in over polished rice) which

has been widely used with success in the Federated Malay

States, and in the Philippines etc.

Plague. It is of considerable interest to note that investi

gations in Hong Kong covering the previous nine years shows

that 15% of plague infections occurred in the Black Rat

(Rattus rattus) against 85% in the Brown Rat (Rattus Norvegi.

cus). This is not in accordance with the observations made

in Kenya (see Annual Medical Report, 1921) where it is

concluded that "plague in Kenya (apart from Mombasa, where

Rattus Norvegicus probably plays a part) is only associated

with the black rat (Rattus rattus kijabius)". No information

is given as to the clinical varieties of the disease which

existed among the 1,181 cases certified.
